The Response

HFM was founded to open the eyes of the faith community to the tremendous needs of people touched by developmental disabilities and their families.

The numbers of children being diagnosed with developmental disabilities is on a dramatic rise – with approx 1 in 160 being diagnosed with autism alone. These are staggering numbers that greatly effect the make-up of our communities.

We serve as a mission field, providing places and activities during which people can experience relationship with members of the disability community. There are too few opportunities to learn the language and culture of disability; we cannot expect to change the future for these precious people without first giving the public a chance to form friendships and learn from them.We believe that ALL people were “fearfully and wonderfully made” Psalm 139:14, and we seek to help open the eyes of the public to the gifts and value in this special community.

After spending time with us, our hope is that our volunteers go away with

  • having experienced Christ’s love
  • the motivation to go to their churches, civic groups and workplaces and begin to reach out to the disability community
  • the desire to come back

We offer a variety of opportunities to work with and learn from people with disabilities. Please see our “Event” listings for our current offerings.

HFM offers three main programs:

  • Community Nights: Held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month, Community Nights are the building blocks of HFM. These special evenings provide time for our guests with disabilities, family members, volunteers, staff and supporters to come together in Christ to experience each others gifts.
  • Activity Clubs: These fun clubs are for our adult friends with disabilities who enjoy getting out into the community and experiencing all that Charleston has to offer. Not only does this ministry offer new friends and new experiences to the participant but allows the family a period of much-needed and very important respite.
  • Caregiver Support: HFM offers a variety of retreats, workshops and bible studies for any person who finds it their privilege to be a caregiver for someone. The retreats are about discovering God's love for us and how to extend that love to others.
